To hoist over or above a public road, which includes the roadway, pedestrian footpaths and cycleways, approval is required under section 68 of the Local Government Act and section 138 of the Roads Act. This includes using mobile equipment that is placed on a public road and site-installed equipment such as tower cranes.
Mobile devices
- mobile cranes including crane trucks and Hiabs
- cherry-pickers and elevated work platforms
If you’re using any equipment listed above, you firstly need to obtain approval from the City and be granted a permit before any crane work can be undertaken.
If public access around the site is likely to be affected by mobile hoisting equipment, you may be required to provide additional information, such as a traffic/pedestrian control plan to support your application.

Through our experience, knowledge and vast connections, we can provide you with Council, Police, STA and any other permits you may require for your job or event normally within 24 – 48 hours of submitting your application.
